From the first Toy Story movie, Woody was shown to be a loyal and dedicated toy to his owner, Andy. He saw his role as a leader among the other toys in Andy’s room, but his own ego often got in the way. For example, when Buzz Lightyear was introduced to the group, Woody felt threatened and saw Buzz as a rival. He was jealous of Buzz’s popularity and ignored the value that Buzz could bring to the toy community.
Hamm, the piggy bank, brought up Woody’s insensitivity during a conversation with Buzz, “Woody thinks he’s the leader of this toy population”, Hamm turned to Buzz. ”And he can be a bit — I don’t know”.

When Lotso first met Woody, he immediately saw him as a threat to his power and tried to eliminate him. Woody, however, saw past the anger and animosity in Lotso and tried to build a relationship despite their differences.
When Woody finally confronted Lotso about his behavior and asked him why he was so angry, Lotso shared his personal journey about being abandoned by his owner and resentment he developed for all humans. Woody listened intently and understood where Lotso was coming from. This connection eventually helped give Lotso a change of heart, and he chose to help the other toys escape from the daycare center as a result.
