The Lion King and the Importance of Emotional Regulation in Parent-Child Relationships

by Tony Murakami

In a far-off land where the scorching sun never ceased to rise, there lived a group of animals. Among them were Simba, the lion cub, Mufasa, the wise and powerful lion king, and Scar, the treacherous uncle of Simba.

Simba had grown up in the pride lands, and he admired his father, Mufasa, who taught him many important lessons about life in the jungle. Mufasa always took care of his son, and he always made sure that Simba had what he needed to grow up strong and healthy.

As Simba grew older, he began to develop a fiery temper, and he often found himself caught up in arguments with Scar, who always seemed to take pleasure in provoking him. Scar was jealous of Simba, and he resented the cub’s bond with Mufasa.

One day, after a particularly heated argument with Scar, Simba ran to his father, looking for comfort and support.

“Mufasa, I don’t understand why Scar is always so mean to me. He’s always trying to start a fight, and he never stops until I get angry. Why can’t he just leave me alone?” Simba asked, his voice full of frustration.

Mufasa looked at his son, and he placed a comforting paw on his shoulder. “Simba, you must remember that we are all different, and we all have different ways of expressing our emotions. Scar is not like you, and he may not be able to control his feelings as well as you can. But that doesn’t give him the right to bully or belittle you.”

Simba nodded, still feeling angry and confused. “But what can I do? I don’t want to keep fighting with Scar, but I don’t know how to stop myself.”

Mufasa smiled at his son, a glint of pride in his eyes. “Emotional regulation is a crucial skill, my son. It helps us manage our feelings and control our reactions, even in difficult situations. It’s something that takes practice, but with time, you can master it.”

Simba listened carefully, absorbing his father’s words. “How can I practice emotional regulation?” he asked.

Mufasa thought for a moment before speaking. “Disney has many characters that can teach us about emotional regulation.”

“Like who?” Simba asked.

Mufasa smiled back at his son. “Like Elsa from Frozen, for example. She learned to control her emotions and conquer her fears, even when everything around her seemed impossible. Or Joy from Inside Out, who taught us the importance of balancing happiness and sadness to maintain emotional wellness.”

Simba nodded thoughtfully, ready to hear more. “What else can we learn from Disney characters, Dad?”

Mufasa looked towards the sky and thought for a moment. “Well, there is also Dory from Finding Nemo, who learned how to find strength in her moments of doubt and rely on her friends for support. Or Belle from Beauty and the Beast, who showed us that kindness, empathy, and compassion can help us connect with others and build strong relationships.”

“I see,” said Simba. “So if I watch Disney movies and practice emotional regulation, I can control my feelings better?”

Mufasa patted his son on the back. “That’s the idea, Simba.”

Simba smiled, feeling inspired by his father’s words. He knew that there would be more challenges ahead of him, but he was ready to face them head-on and apply what he had learned. He had a newfound appreciation for Disney characters and the lessons they taught about emotional regulation.

From that day onwards, Simba practiced emotional regulation and watched Disney movies, learning new ways to express his emotions and connect with others. Thanks to the support of his father, Mufasa, and the guidance of Disney characters, Simba grew into a wise and compassionate lion, ready to face whatever challenges came his way.
In Disney movies, characters like Elsa, Joy, Dory, and Belle can teach us about emotional regulation and how to manage our feelings, according to Mufasa’s advice to Simba.

“Emotional regulation is a crucial skill; it helps us manage our feelings and control our reactions, even in difficult situations.” – Mufasa
