The Wisdom of Pocahontas: Understanding Emotional Maturity as a Parent

by Tony Murakami

As parents, we are often reminded of the importance of emotional maturity in raising our children. We strive to teach them how to handle their emotions and communicate effectively, but sometimes it can be difficult to know where to start. Luckily, we can turn to some of our favorite Disney characters for guidance, particularly Pocahontas, who embodies emotional intelligence and wisdom.

As the daughter of Chief Powhatan, Pocahontas had significant responsibility and expectations placed upon her. Yet, she navigated her position with grace and understanding, always striving to communicate honestly and empathetically with those around her. Her ability to listen to intuition and emotions helped her to connect with others in a meaningful way.

For example, in Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World, Pocahontas finds herself navigating unfamiliar territory when she travels to England. Despite the distance between her and the people she meets, Pocahontas manages to connect with John Rolfe, a diplomat from England. Their connection is based on their ability to understand each other’s emotions, particularly their mutual feelings of loss and loneliness.

This is in contrast to John Smith, who Pocahontas also met in the original film, who struggles to understand her connection to the natural world and her people. When John Smith begins to treat her people poorly, Pocahontas stands up for them, showing emotional maturity in her ability to see the bigger picture and put herself in their shoes.

Another Disney character who embodies emotional intelligence is Elsa from Frozen. Elsa struggles with controlling her powers and the emotions that come along with them. She isolates herself from others, afraid of causing harm and of being judged for who she is. However, it is through her journey that Elsa learns to embrace her emotions and understand that her powers are not a curse but a gift.

Anna, Elsa’s sister, also learns the importance of emotional maturity throughout both Frozen films. In the first movie, she is impulsive and emotionally driven, eager for adventure and attention. But as she navigates the dangers of Elsa’s magic, Anna learns the importance of communication and understanding.

In Frozen 2, Anna learns to trust her intuition and listen to her emotions when she follows a call from within herself to help Elsa. Despite the danger and unknown ahead of her, Anna is brave and determined, showing emotional strength and understanding.

Finally, we can look to Mulan as an example of emotional intelligence and maturity. Mulan struggles with the expectations placed upon her as a woman in her society. She fears not being able to live up to these expectations and bring honor to her family. However, it is through her journey in the army that Mulan learns to trust herself and her abilities.

Mulan’s interactions with her fellow soldiers are based on her emotional intelligence. She listens to their concerns and works to bridge the gap between her own culture and theirs. In doing so, Mulan also learns to accept herself for who she is, rather than trying to fit a mold.

These Disney characters provide us with valuable lessons on emotional maturity and intelligence. Through their journeys, we see the importance of understanding emotions, listening to intuition, and communicating effectively. As parents, we can use these examples to better guide our children and teach them these valuable life skills.

In a conversation between Pocahontas and Anna, the two discuss the importance of emotional maturity and how it has impacted their lives.

“Being able to understand and control your emotions is so important,” Pocahontas said. “It allows you to connect with others in a deeper way.”

Anna nodded, “I’ve learned that the hard way. My impulsiveness used to get me in trouble, but now I know how to communicate better and listen to what others are feeling.”

“That’s a great example of emotional intelligence,” Pocahontas replied. “It takes practice, but it’s worth it. It allows us to better connect with and understand those around us.”

Through these Disney characters, we can learn valuable lessons on emotional intelligence and maturity, which in turn can help us guide our children towards a more empathetic and connected society.
