Self-Esteem Lessons from Disney: How Ariel Overcame Self-Doubt and Became a Confident Mermaid Princess

by Steel Pencil

*Location:* Under the sea, in the kingdom of Atlantica.

The blue-green waters danced with excitement as the mermaids gathered at the castle’s amphitheater. Ariel, the mermaid princess, was scheduled to share her journey towards becoming confident. She swam towards the center of the stage, glowing with pride as she looked out at her sea creature friends.

“Hello, everyone! I am excited to share my story with you today. When I was younger, I dreamed of exploring the surface and collecting human objects. My father, King Triton, forbade me from doing so, and I became filled with self-doubt. I felt like I wasn’t good enough or brave enough to pursue my dreams.”

Flounder, her loyal fish friend, chimed in, “But you found a way to overcome that, Ariel! Tell them how.”

Ariel smiled and continued, “Yes, I did. I met a human prince named Eric, and I knew I had to take a chance and follow my heart. I went to Ursula, the sea witch, and made a deal to exchange my voice for legs. I knew it was risky, but I believed in myself and my dream.”

Sebastian, the crab, who had helped Ariel along the way, interjected, “You were so determined, mon. Even when you lost your voice, you found a way to communicate through song and gestures.”

Ariel nodded. “That’s right, Sebastian. I had to adapt and learn new ways to express myself. And in the end, I saved Eric and defeated Ursula. I realized that I was capable of so much more than I thought, and I learned to believe in myself and my abilities.”

The mermaids erupted in applause, and Ariel beamed with pride. She had faced her self-doubt and emerged stronger and more confident. She hoped that her story inspired her fellow sea creatures to do the same, to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams.

**Key Takeaways:**

1. Self-doubt can hold us back from pursuing our dreams, but with determination and belief in ourselves, we can overcome it.
2. Sometimes, we need to adapt and learn new skills to achieve our goals.
3. It’s important to have supportive friends and allies along the way.
4. Taking risks and facing our fears can lead to personal growth and increased confidence.

“Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle.” – Christian D. Larson
