A Whole New Communication: The Role of Maturity in Aladdin and Beyond

by Tony Murakami

Throughout the years, Disney has brought us countless stories of princes and princesses who endured struggles, conquered evil, and have lived happily ever after. One of the most famous stories in the Disney universe is Aladdin, where a street urchin finds a magical lamp and falls in love with the princess of Agrabah. This classic tale, however, has more to offer than what meets the eye. When we take a closer look at the relationships between characters, we can see how maturity plays a crucial role in communication, not just in Aladdin, but beyond.

Let’s start with Aladdin himself. At the beginning of the story, he is portrayed as a carefree, arrogant, young man who only cares about himself and his monkey, Abu. He may have had good intentions when he tried to steal from the marketplace, but he failed to understand the consequences that his actions had on society. It wasn’t until he met Jasmine, the princess of Agrabah, that he began to realize the severity of his actions.

“I never realized how much I had until I met you,” Aladdin tells Jasmine, as they fly on the magic carpet over the city. “I thought having money and jewels would make me happy, but it’s only when I’m with you that I feel truly happy.”

Jasmine, who has faced her own struggles and limitations as a woman in a patriarchal society, understands Aladdin’s need for validation. “You don’t need to pretend to be someone you’re not,” she tells him. “My father may be the Sultan, but I don’t want to marry someone just because of their status. I want to marry someone who understands me, and that someone is you.”

Aladdin and Jasmine’s relationship demonstrates how maturity is essential in communication. The more they get to know each other, the more they realize that their differences can complement each other rather than pull them apart. Aladdin learns the value of honesty and selflessness; Jasmine learns the importance of following her heart and standing up for herself.

But Aladdin and Jasmine’s love story isn’t the only example of communication and maturity in the Disney universe. Take, for instance, the relationship between Woody and Buzz in Toy Story. At first, Woody sees Buzz as a threat to his status as Andy’s favorite toy. He tries to get rid of him, but when he accidentally pushes him out of the window, he realizes the gravity of his actions.

“We’re supposed to be Andy’s toys,” Woody says, as he and the other toys embark on a rescue mission for Buzz. “But how can we be that if we don’t have each other’s backs?”

Buzz, who initially thought he was a real space ranger, comes to realize the value of being a toy. “I may not be a real astronaut, but when I’m with you guys, I feel like I’m part of something bigger than myself,” he tells Woody.

Woody and Buzz’s relationship shows how communication and maturity can bridge the gaps between individuals with different personalities and backgrounds. As they work together to get back to Andy’s house, they learn to appreciate each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Woody learns to be a better leader, while Buzz learns to be more empathetic towards others.

Finally, we can look at the example of Tiana and Prince Naveen in The Princess and the Frog. Tiana is a hardworking waitress who dreams of opening her restaurant, while Naveen is a lazy prince who lives off his parents’ fortune. When they meet, they clash at first, but soon they realize that they have a common goal.

“I may be a frog now, but I can still appreciate hard work and dedication,” Naveen tells Tiana, as they embark on a journey to find a way to break the spell that turned them into amphibians.

Tiana, who has always believed in working hard to achieve her dreams, learns to make time for herself and those around her. “I never realized that life could be this fun,” she tells Naveen, as they dance in the bayou.

Tiana and Naveen’s relationship demonstrates how communication and maturity can bring people of different backgrounds and beliefs together. They learn to appreciate each other’s qualities and find a common ground that benefits both of them.

In conclusion, Disney stories have taught us a lot about love, friendship, and courage, among other virtues. When we look beyond the surface-level plot, we can see how communication and maturity play a crucial role in the growth and development of characters. Whether it’s Aladdin and Jasmine learning to accept each other’s differences, Woody and Buzz realizing the importance of teamwork, or Tiana and Naveen finding a common goal, these Disney characters show us that maturity is not just about age, but about how we respond to challenges and opportunities in our lives.
Disney stories showcase the importance of communication and maturity in relationships. The examples of Aladdin and Jasmine, Woody and Buzz, and Tiana and Naveen demonstrate how individuals can learn from each other and grow together, bridging differences and achieving common goals.
