Finding Maturity in the Kingdom: How Disney Characters Have Mastered Effective Communication

As children, we all grew up watching Disney movies and being in awe of the magical world of these characters. Though their stories are often fantastical, they share one significant theme: the journey towards maturity. Whether it’s a young girl fighting to save her father in “Beauty and the Beast” or a curious mermaid exploring the world above in “The Little Mermaid,” they all have one common denominator- communication.

Effective communication has been a key factor in many Disney movies. From talking animals to fellow humans, each character has demonstrated the different ways in which communication can be used to achieve a goal. Through these movies, we can learn valuable life lessons on how to effectively communicate with people.

In “The Lion King,” Simba learns the importance of communication and how it can help solve problems. When his father, Mufasa, died, Simba ran away and left his kingdom in shambles. It wasn’t until he had a conversation with Rafiki, the wise baboon, where he was able to realize that the right way to honor his father’s memory was to return to Pride Rock and take his rightful place as the king. Simba learned that it’s never too late to make things right and that communication can help in finding a solution to any problem.

Similarly, in “The Little Mermaid,” Ariel struggles to communicate with Prince Eric. Being an underwater creature and being mute made it difficult for her to express herself. However, with the help of her friend Flounder and the crab Sebastian, she found ways to communicate through dancing, singing, and acting. In the end, Ariel gained the trust of Prince Eric by opening up to him. She learned the importance of finding alternative ways to communicate and not relying on words alone.

In “Beauty and the Beast,” Belle finds herself trapped in a castle with the Beast after her father becomes his prisoner. Initially, Belle and the Beast struggle to communicate, with their differences causing tension between them. As time goes on, Belle finds that the Beast is not so different from her, and they open up to each other through conversations and shared experiences like dancing and singing. Belle teaches the Beast that effective communication is about finding common ground and understanding each other, regardless of differences.

In “Frozen,” Elsa and Anna’s sibling relationship is put to the test when Elsa’s powers are revealed, and Anna unintentionally sets off her sister’s powers by trying to calm her. The two sisters, who were once inseparable, become estranged because of this. However, they eventually learn to communicate openly and honestly with each other when Elsa saves Anna from freezing to death. Anna reassures Elsa that she loves her, and they mend their relationship. This serves as a reminder that communication can help lift barriers and bring people closer.

In “Tangled,” Rapunzel, who has been locked up in a tower by her mother, communicates with the bandit Flynn Rider to experience the outside world. Initially, the two are at odds with each other, but as they spend more time together, they begin to open up and share their stories with each other. They learn that effective communication is essential to building interpersonal relationships and trust.

Disney movies are much more than entertainment. They are inspirational stories that teach us valuable life lessons on communication, relationships, and maturity. Whether it’s opening up, finding alternative ways to communicate or finding common ground, effective communication is the key to building and maintaining meaningful relationships.

We can all learn from these memorable Disney characters and their journeys towards maturity.
