Lessons on Maturity and Overcoming Adversity from Disney’s Mulan

by Tony Murakami

Disney’s Mulan is a classic tale of a young girl finding her place in the world and overcoming adversity to prove her worth. However, beyond just being a story of courage and strength, Mulan’s journey also offers valuable lessons on maturity and overcoming adversity that can inspire and guide audiences of all ages.

Throughout Mulan’s journey, she is guided by a variety of characters who offer her wisdom and advice that help her mature and tackle the challenges that come her way. One such character is her father, Fa Zhou, who speaks to Mulan about the importance of honoring her family and responsibilities, even when it’s difficult.

“Mulan, the greatest honor is having you as a daughter,” Fa Zhou tells her. “I’ve already created a monument in my heart to commemorate this day.”

Fa Zhou teaches Mulan that being a part of a family means understanding one’s role within it and fulfilling responsibilities, even when it’s hard or goes against one’s personal desires. His words help to shape Mulan’s understanding of what it means to be mature and make difficult decisions, even when it’s not what she wants for herself.

One other character who offers Mulan guidance and wisdom on her journey is the wise and powerful dragon Mushu. Reluctantly tasked with guiding Mulan and helping her achieve her goals, Mushu becomes a mentor and friend to the young girl, teaching her how to think creatively and take action in difficult situations.

“You gotta use your head, and be smart,” Mushu tells Mulan. “When something looks too hard, there’s always an easier way.”

Mushu’s teachings become invaluable to Mulan throughout her journey, as she learns to think critically and use her wit and ingenuity to overcome obstacles that might otherwise be insurmountable. His guidance shows Mulan the importance of cultivating a strong mind and attitude, even when things seem impossible.

Another character who plays a significant role in Mulan’s journey is the wise and kind-hearted Grandmother Fa. With her sharp wit and insight into the world, Grandmother Fa offers Mulan advice on everything from being bold in love to standing up for one’s beliefs.

“Who am I? Who am I?! I am the guardian of lost souls,” Grandmother Fa boasts to Mulan. “I am the powerful, the pleasurable, the indestructible Mushu.”

While Grandmother Fa’s words might seem like nonsense to Mulan at first, she soon comes to understand that they encapsulate a profound truth about the power of self-belief and self-confidence. Through Grandmother Fa’s guidance, Mulan learns to trust in herself and her abilities, even in the face of hardship and difficulty.

Finally, there is the villainous Shan Yu, the Hun warrior who stands as Mulan’s most formidable opponent. Though he is ultimately defeated by Mulan’s courage and skill, Shan Yu teaches Mulan an important lesson on the nature of adversity and the need to be constantly vigilant in the face of danger.

“You took away my victory!” Shan Yu growls at Mulan after she defeats him. “No matter. The cold will kill you both. Then I will simply… Find another as easy to manipulate as you.”

Shan Yu’s words remind Mulan that there will always be enemies and obstacles to face in life, and that the key to overcoming them is to remain vigilant and prepared at all times. His presence in the story serves as a constant reminder to Mulan of the importance of humility and the need to stay focused and aware in the face of adversity.

Through these many characters and experiences, Mulan learns valuable lessons about maturity, adversity, and the need to believe in oneself. Whether it’s through the guidance of her father, the creativity of her dragon mentor, the wisdom of her grandmother, or the danger posed by her enemy, Mulan ultimately emerges from her struggles as a stronger, wiser, and more confident person.

For audiences of all ages, Mulan’s journey serves as an inspiring example of what it means to overcome adversity and find one’s place in the world. Whether we’re facing our own struggles or simply looking to improve ourselves, there are lessons to be learned from Mulan’s journey that can help guide us through even the most difficult times.
