Self-Control and Maturity: The Lessons from Disney’s Moana

Disney’s animated movie Moana, is a beautiful story that teaches us important lessons about self-control and maturity. The movie is an amazing blend of adventure, music, and cultural representation. The movie features many beloved Disney characters, who convey important lessons throughout the film. Through the characters, Moana, Maui, and Te Fiti, the movie teaches us about self-control, maturity, and the importance of taking responsibility for our actions.

Moana is a bright young woman who is poised to become the next chief of her village. She is tasked with fulfilling the mission to restore the heart of Te Fiti, the goddess who has the power to create life itself. Throughout her journey, Moana learns important lessons about self-control and maturity. The scene where she confronts her own demons while sailing is a prime example. When the ocean starts to become rough, she starts to lose her temper, and in a fit of frustration hurls her oar into the water. However, the ocean doesn’t accept this behavior, and throws the oar back at her. In response, Moana takes a deep breath, calms down, and uses her oars calmly to keep the boat afloat. By doing so, she demonstrates self-control and a level of maturity far beyond her years.

Maui, on the other hand, is a demigod who initially lacks these traits. He is a brash and impulsive character who makes rash decisions without thinking about the consequences. For instance, he steals the heart of Te Fiti hoping to gain immortality, but instead, bring about an apocalyptic curse to all the islands. Despite his initial bad deeds, he matures throughout the story and comes to appreciate the value of self-control. In a scene where Moana catches up with him, she makes Maui realize the importance of taking responsibility for his actions. Moana warns Maui that his actions have severe consequences, and he has to take ownership and undo the damage caused by his actions. Maui’s maturity is evident as he decides to team up with Moana and help her complete the mission to restore the heart of Te Fiti.

Te Fiti is a goddess that ultimately signifies the end goal of Moana’s journey. She represents the restored livelihood of the ocean and is a symbol of new beginnings. Although Te Fiti has her own role, she highlights the value of self-control and maturity to the other characters. When she loses her heart, she becomes a twisted and terrifying monster, which demonstrates what can happen when we let our emotions control us rather than the other way around.

The scene where Moana returns Te Fiti’s heart to her is a beautiful illustration of this message. As Moana slowly inches toward Te Fiti, who is on the verge of annihilating everything in her path, she demonstrates incredible courage and maturity. She shows restraint, knowing that her actions could worsen the situation. Despite Te Fiti’s anger, Moana continues to approach her until she is close enough to attach her heart, successfully restoring Te Fiti to her former state.

Through these characters, Disney’s Moana beautifully teaches us about self-control and maturity. The benefits of self-control are evident throughout the movie from the characters overcoming challenges and negative emotions, such as anger and impulsiveness to achieve their mission. Maturity is demonstrated through the characters taking responsibility for their actions and making wise and informed choices. By understanding and putting these virtues into practice, we too can overcome life’s obstacles and live victorious.
Disney’s Moana is not only an adventure-filled movie with music and cultural representation but also teaches important life lessons about self-control and maturity. The characters of Moana, Maui, and Te Fiti illustrate the importance of taking responsibility for one’s actions and the power of emotional regulation.
